Buying a New Computer

Buying a New Computer

When do you need a new computer?  If your present computer does what you want, and you don't mind the slower speed, I recommend keeping it.  But if you want better performance, it's time for a new computer.

Keep in mind that a computer usually costs more than just the advertised price.  There might be costs for software, internet, internet security, printer, paper, ink, and CDs or DVDs for backups, as well as your time getting it all set up and running the way you want.  But for all this, you also get the enjoyment of a new computer and its wonderful speed.
So which computer is the one to buy?  A Macintosh costs more than twice as much as a PC, but as we've noted in previous columns, there are often fewer problems with a Mac than with a PC.  The new Windows 7 should reduce some of these problems.  The downside of a Mac, besides its higher price tag, is that it doesn't always run all the software that you want to use, especially games.

This link compares Windows 7 with Mac OS X Snow Leopard:

If you want a PC with Microsoft Windows 7, I would suggest that you wait a few months before buying.  Let Microsoft repair all the problems it is bound to encounter with its new operating system.  On the other hand, if you can still find a new computer with the old Windows Vista, it may be considerably cheaper than a computer with Windows 7.  Contrary to what some people seem to think, Windows Vista is a solid operating system, and Windows 7 is built on that stability.

When you buy a computer nowadays, it usually comes with all the internal hardware you need:  modem, network connection (maybe even wireless capability), sound card, and CD/DVD burner.  Add a monitor, and you are ready to go.  If you already have a monitor that you like, you do not need to replace it.

If you will mostly use just email and internet, anything on the market should work for you.  A desktop will cost less than a laptop, and the price of a netbook will be between the two but probably won't have a CD or DVD.  Don't try to buy the most expensive unit, but you probably also don't want the absolute cheapest either.  Something in the middle will be good, with a CPU speed of at least 1.6 and plenty of RAM as discussed in the last Bits & Bytes column.  Keep an eye out for sales, especially on older models.  But don't bother with second-hand computers.  You'd end up with old software and the previous owner's problems.
Whether a Mac, Windows 7 or Windows Vista, a new computer can give you the speed you desire.
