I bought my first computer for its word processing ability, but I spent more time playing games on it.  Nowadays there is a myriad of computer games.  Many are very complex and marketed heavily, but there are also plenty of free games available if you know where to look.  Some games can be played whenever you have a few minutes, while others require concentration for an extended amount of time.  You can play games on your own computer by yourself, or you can play online with others or alone.

If you have a Windows computer, there are several games already installed.  You can access these by clicking on the "Start" button in the lower left corner of your computer screen, then clicking on "All Programs", and finally on "Games".  You will see several card games there, as well as other games such as Reversi and pinball (in Windows XP) or chess and Mahjongg (in Windows Vista).

Not sure how to play a particular game?  Start the game and then press the F1 key at the top of your keyboard.  This will usually give you step by step instructions, as well as tips for higher scores.

Macintosh users don't have it as good.  Apple decided long ago that including games made people think of the computer as a toy.  Sadly, to this day, Macintosh does not include any games other than Chess.  Do not entirely give up hope, however, because the rest of this article can apply to Macs as well as to pc's.

For a large selection of free online games, try
www.games.yahoo.com .  Here the games are categorized by genre, or you can search for a specific game by name.  All of these games are free to play online, though you may have to sign up for a free account.  There are also games that you can download to play offline, but many of these offline games will let you play only a "trial version" before paying.

For even more games, go to
www.download.com and click on "Games" on the left side.  Some of these games will be completely free, while others will be free for a limited time, after which they will want you to pay.

At some department stores you can purchase an inexpensive cd with thousands of games.  Some of these games will work great, but others might have faulty programming.  Most of the games on those cd's are also offered on
www.download.com and other safe download websites.  (As always, be sure to download programs only from trusted websites, such as www.download.com where they scan all their files for malware.)

Still want more games?  There are literally thousands of games for sale at electronic and department stores (Try the Electronics Mall on 16 de Septiembre, downtown GDL.), and even more for sale online, such as at
www.ebay.com and www.amazon.com , among others.

A home computer has many uses, and one of the most enjoyable of these is games.
