Three Types of Pounamu Repair,
Including 2 Types of Kintsugi

Of course pounamu can be repaired. Most anything broken can be fixed, including your pounamu (greenstone, jade).I offer three types of pounamu repair. It’s entirely your choice. And feel free to ask questions in my Contact Page.

1. Clear Repair

The first type of pounamu repair I offer is a clear repair so that the repair shows as a clear thin line. (Glue takes up space between the pieces of course. But I use the least amount of glue to effect a proper pounamu repair, so this line is as thin as possible.)

This is the least visible repair, and oftentimes it is completely invisible. If you want your pounamu to be as close as possible to the original, this is the repair you probably want.

  • Least expensive
  • Clear line and least visible repair

Two Types of Kintsugi Repair

Repaired pounamu using kintsugi technique.
Broken pounamu can be repaired using the kintsugi technique. The gold highlights the repair, adding to the unique history of the repaired pounamu.

I also offer two types of repair that use the Japanese art of kintsugi. This actually highlights the repair. Kinstugi adds to the history of your pounamu. This repair shows as a slightly raised gold line where the parts are fitted together. The gold contrasts beautifully with the greenstone. I heartily recommend this type of pounamu repair to anyone with a broken pounamu, since it is my favourite.

2. Faux-Kintsugi

I call the first type of kintsugi repair, “faux-kintsugi.” I use strong but inexpensive glues to repair your pounamu. Most people outside Japan mean this type of repair when they talk about kintsugi.

  • Gold line (I use gold mica, but if you want real gold, just let me know.)
  • Looks nearly identical to true kintsugi (kintsukuroi, explained  next)

3. True Kintsukuroi Pounamu Repair

True kintsugi (kintsukuroi) uses a rare and expensive tree sap (urushiol) imported from Japan as the glue. This repair takes at least a week and can take up to two months, depending on the number of pieces your pounamu is in. Each time urushi is applied, it has to set up for at least a week, and it can take several applications to complete the repair. I usually complete the other types of repair within a week or so, depending how busy I am.

  • Most expensive
  • Gold line (I use gold mica, but if you want real gold, just let me know.)

And if you want, I can restring your pounamu necklace with new cord, binding, lashings and all.
